Rules for choosing a string instrument in an informed manner

  1. Don’t buy Chinese or Romanian-made instruments, which are often passed off as Italian, even by established luthiers.
  2. Choose instruments made from wood from your local area: sustainable and authentic. This includes the fingerboard and accessories.
  3. Always request documentation of the origin and authenticity of the handcrafting, accompanied by explanatory photos.
  4. Choose modern instruments over antique ones, unless you’re also looking to make a financial investment. In this case, make sure the instrument isn’t a fake by choosing a trusted luthier.
  5. Don’t buy an instrument whose sound doesn’t convince you. Remember that the instrument you purchase will remain yours even if you change teachers and music schools; make the choice yours alone and accept only impartial advice.
  6. Always make sure the instrument you’re offered isn’t burdened by the bribe some music teachers ask of the luthier.
  7. Choose instruments that fit your body measurements.
  8. Violin making is science, technique, and art. It’s not a religion. Don’t believe dogmas and false myths. Get informed!
